This natural oil can aid the management of healthy blood pressure levels in active adults.* A 2013 study of Nigella sativa seeds, from which black seed oil is produced, looked at their overall effect on hypertension (high blood pressure). Seventy volunteers received either black seed oil or a placebo two times a day during the study. In the end, researchers found that black seed oil appeared to decrease systolic and diastolic blood pressure in subjects.1
Black seed oil’s anti-inflammatory properties can soothe irritation through the respiratory system and promote better airflow.* In 2011, a 30-day double-blind clinical trial exposed 66 patients suffering from hay fever to either black seed oil or a placebo. Researchers found that the oil had a positive effect on allergy symptoms, including congestion and sneezing, after two weeks.2

“Black seed” is a general term that may refer to caraway, cumin, kalonji, Roman coriander, or onion seeds. NatureWise Black Seed Oil uses seeds from the Nigella sativa plant (which, while related to Cannabis sativa, has no psychoactive properties) that grows in the Middle East, Western Asia, and Eastern Europe. Black cumin is a cousin of brown cumin, the popular cooking spice, and can similarly be used to add flavor to dishes and baked goods in addition to its herbal remedy applications.
Thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, and thymol are three different chemical constituents of black seed oil. In recent studies, thymoquinone (TQ) has demonstrated potential to lower inflammation and ward off certain diseases, but more research is needed to understand its true efficacy. Thymohydroquinone (THQ) has reported antibacterial benefits, and both TQ and THQ have been studied for their antitumor activity. Thymol, a chemical also found in thyme, has exhibited antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. All three compounds have antifungal effects that may prevent certain types of infections.
Included in Avicenna’s extensive work “The Canon of Medicine,” black seeds have been used in herbal remedies for over a thousand years. Thought to “stimulate the body’s energy” and promote “recovery from fatigue and dispiritedness,” the N. sativa plant and seeds have been employed in the treatment of “a variety of disorders, diseases, and conditions pertaining to respiratory system, digestive tract, kidney and liver function, cardiovascular system and immune support system support.”1 The seeds have helped to treat “asthma, bronchitis, rheumatism, and related inflammatory diseases,” and interrupt the vomiting reflex, and tinctures have been used for “indigestion, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dropsy, amenorrhea and...in the treatment of worms and skin eruptions.” Seed oil has also served as a natural antiseptic and local anesthetic.1
Black seed oil has antihistamine properties that may combat dandruff and scalp inflammation and help encourage hair growth when diluted with a carrier oil, like coconut or olive, and used as a topical treatment. Its application to hair strands may also promote softness and shine. The results of a handful of small studies have suggested that black seed oil may help reduce hair loss and improve a condition called telogen effluvium, but more research is needed to determine its effectiveness.2
Sea moss, or Irish moss, has been used medicinally in various cultures to treat coughs and infections. It’s gaining traction on the health and wellness scene for its supposed ability to “boost immunity, soothe digestion, strengthen joints, and improve skin health.”3 These benefits aren’t well researched, however, and the studies that have been conducted have taken place in a lab setting and used varying types of sea moss. The bioavailability and digestibility of sea moss also haven’t been studied yet, and its high iodine content makes it possible to consume too much with detrimental effects on thyroid hormones.
